Ode to Shallowness. Whee.

Posted in Categorised on October 31, 2006 by riezawa

You can’t see what’s in another’s heart. (Or at least I can’t. Sad, innit?)

You can’t hear another’s thoughts. (Ditto to this one)

What you can see or hear, however, are faces and voices. Material, uhm, matter.

So why should you not judge by appearances?

What’s wrong with book covers anyway? I always judge new books by their covers. Always. Covers that aren’t that nice hint at the possible fact that the publisher didn’t like the book well enough to bother getting it a nice cover… Or maybe the writer was so desperate to get published he/she/it didn’t care about the crappy cover. Nice covers are an indication of expectations that the book will sell reasonably well (at least that’s what it seems like to me).

But I disgress. Obviously. Well, s’not like I have anything else to say. Shallowness is fine, especially when you hide crocodiles in it. I mean, um, yeah. Right, whatever.

I’m running out of ideas before the blog is eh… 90 days (?) old? But then since I’m posting, who the heck cares? Ahahaha <— Evil laugh. Really.

Hence the title. I’ll think of something else to write, then continue with the post. At least you don’t have to wait. I’m so not wasting your time.

Okay, I’ve thought of something to write! … Not.

Just so you won’t think I’ve totally wasted your time, here’s a Random Useless Fact of Today: All porcupines float in water.

Someday this will be lost

Anything can happen, and anything will happen. This will be gone, only no one knows when. All will be gone. So why does one (and me, for that matter) persist in recording text that in X years no one will understand? Does anyone even understand now?

Maybe it’s hope, maybe it’s the instinct for the preservation of the species; to record what we know, to teach all we have learnt (in my case, however, it might be very little). Perhaps a response of teaching would be acclaim; popularity. A ‘good’ response. Is that why people seek to ‘teach’, to ‘tell’? To acheive the satisfactory reaction of acclaim? Acclaim being a sign that the knowledge has been passed on, and thus satisfaction results?

What is considered knowledge?

This is so Wrong

I’m meant to write in here every day. People ought to write in their blogs every day. That’s why they’re web logs, web journals, online diaries, whatever you want to call them. It’s an obligation (there’s the word again).

But that’s just my opinion.

So why is this post so wrong? I’ve abandoned the blog for, erm, days. That’s why. Is it a good enough reason? No? Then I suppose I should try to make this post sound wrong. How shall I do that? Awful grammatical errors? Using 1337 – the less in fashion language of the youngest, most infantile nerd-wannabees? Ending a post without saying

A case of writer’s block? Of course not. Er. Laziness, more like. But I really don’t know what to write here. Maybe, um, another Cloudscape? Well… there’s no hint of any cloud in here but it’s bloody cool, so bleh.

Do you hear my sheepishness? No, of course you don’t. I’ll show it too you instead.

Baa.

Alrighty, and out with the truth. I have no idea what to say here today, hence the bizarre title (you clicked on it, not me). So I shall fulfill the objective of the title here too, and sign off for the day.

Moo.

Viable Internet Business Venture?

Posted in Categorised on October 16, 2006 by riezawa

Creating a user dependent website that will give money to users according to how many ads they click (money comes from advertisers). Maybe say… click 100 ads to get, I dunno, a few dollars (do advertisers even pay that well? I don’t know the rates, sad to say.) Problem: will there be advertisers willing to pay when, what, 99% of the users will so obviously just click and close the ads?

Another one would be having this huge pot where people can donate as much money into it as they want, and withdraw as much as they want too. Problem is, what’s stopping people from making bogus accounts and then taking out as much $ as possible? The idea itself sounds like a get-rich-quick scheme (and I could abscond with the moolah anytime I want, whee!)

But I have a catchy name for them already: “QuickBuck”, or “Extra Buck” and, I dunno, “Another Dollar” sounds nice to me… But I have little naming sense.

Anyone interested in the ideas? Can think of solutions to the problems? Wanna help me test em out? Feel free to chat ;) Remember, you saw it here first!

Writing: On Tales

Posted in Categorised on October 15, 2006 by riezawa

The telling of a story, and the human ability to fictionalize. What makes us able to extrapolate a story? How does one become able, when told half a story, to predict what will happen next? Multiple sources determine the ‘probability equations’ used by the mind, making one able to guess roughly the events that will likely ensue from the previous event. Causality, continuity. All that.

Where does all that come from, then? Life, and fiction; or for a better description: life, and predictions of life events from other people. All experiences, whether first-hand, second-hand, never-hand even (they call these daydreams; the unexperienced experience) … All are filtered through the human mind. There is no other perspective.

Getting these predictions correct are not very difficult. What one needs is likely immersion in the culture of the story writer, sufficient experience of common literature… An understanding of multiple cliches, sufficient life experience, even. Knowledge of classic human behaviour. Understanding of the rules of the natural universe.

Nothing is new anymore (this may be, of course, a generalization).

This isn’t new either.

Natural human beings conditioned by life expect a ball to fall towards the ground when it is released from a height of, say, 1 metre, accelerating at 9.8 metres per seconds square and reaching the ground in… I dunno, you do the math. Natural human beings conditioned by mass media (TV, the written word, etc.) expect the evil villain to divulge all dastardly deeds before attempting to murder the hero, who always, always survives and beats the villain without mussing up his hairdo.

Extrapolate this:

Once upon a time, there was a princess… Guess the last sentence. It’ll always be “… happily ever after”, won’t it. But happily ever after never exists. Life goes on.

Ahahaha

I have taken to point of ‘extreme things to do when you’re bored for prolonged periods of time’ to the not-particular limit: Listening to 3600 songs in a bit more than one month.

3k song saga.
